Coffee

The Drink That Wakes Up the World

From ancient legends of Ethiopian shepherds to the modern cafes on every street corner globally, coffee has become one of the world's most popular beverages. It is more than just a stimulant; it is a cultural phenomenon and a social medium.

This note will briefly introduce the wonderful journey from a coffee bean to a fragrant cup of coffee.

From Bean to Cup

  1. Cultivation & Harvesting: Coffee trees grow in the tropical region known as the "Coffee Belt." When the coffee fruit (called a "cherry") ripened to a red color, it is picked by hand or machine.
  2. Processing: The pulp and skin of the cherry are removed to get to the bean. The main methods include natural (sun-dried), washed, and honey processing, each imparting distinct flavors to the beans.
  3. Roasting: This is the key step that determines the final flavor of the coffee. During roasting, complex chemical reactions (like the Maillard reaction) occur inside the beans, creating hundreds of aromatic compounds.
  4. Grinding & Brewing: The roasted beans are ground into a powder, and their flavor compounds are extracted with hot water. Different brewing methods, from pour-over and espresso to French press, result in different taste experiences.

Caffeine: The Magic of Alertness

Caffeine is the primary alkaloid in coffee and a central nervous system stimulant. It temporarily wards off drowsiness and restores alertness. It works by binding to adenosine receptors in our brain, blocking the action of adenosine, which causes sleepiness.
