You Are What You Eat
The saying "You are what you eat" is the essence of Nutrition, the science that studies how nutrients in food are digested, absorbed, and utilized by the body, ultimately affecting our health, growth, and metabolism.
It helps us understand why we need a varied diet and how different foods shape our bodies.
Macronutrients: The Body's "Fuel" and "Building Materials"
These are the nutrients we need to consume in large amounts daily. They provide energy and structural support for the body.
- Carbohydrates: The body's primary and most efficient source of energy. Found mainly in grains, tubers, and fruits.
- Proteins: The "building materials" of body tissues, used to build and repair muscles, skin, enzymes, and hormones. Sourced mainly from meat, eggs, dairy, and beans.
- Fats: Provide dense energy, help absorb fat-soluble vitamins, and form cell membranes. Nuts, avocados, and vegetable oils are sources of healthy fats.
Micronutrients: The Body's "Lubricants"
We need these nutrients in very small amounts, but they are crucial for maintaining normal bodily functions, much like lubricants in a machine.
