Species Protection

Why Protect Biodiversity?

Species Protection, or Conservation Biology, is the science of protecting nature and the Earth's biodiversity. It's concerned not just with "charismatic" species like pandas and tigers, but with the entire intricate web of life that maintains the health of our ecosystems.

Ultimately, protecting biodiversity is about protecting the environment upon which humanity itself depends. A healthy ecosystem provides clean air and water, regulates the climate, and supplies us with food and medicine.

Where Do Threats Come From? (HIPPO)

The renowned biologist E.O. Wilson summarized the five main threats to biodiversity with the acronym "HIPPO":

  1. H (Habitat Loss): Urban sprawl, agricultural development, and deforestation are the single greatest threats to species.
  2. I (Invasive Species): Alien species that proliferate in new environments without natural predators, crowding out native species.
  3. P (Pollution): Contamination from pesticides, industrial waste, plastic garbage, etc., severely degrades species' habitats.
  4. P (Population Growth): The growth of the human population itself, and the resource consumption that comes with it, is the root source of pressure on all environmental issues.
  5. O (Overharvesting): Overfishing, poaching, and excessive logging that deplete species' populations beyond their ability to recover.

In addition, Climate Change is increasingly becoming a major factor that exacerbates all of the above threats.
