A cultural movement in Europe from the 14th to 17th centuries, centered on the rebirth of 'classical era' ideas, marking Europe's transition from the Middle Ages to modernity.

The Renaissance

A Movement of "Rebirth"

The Renaissance was not an "event" with a clear beginning and end, but rather a cultural movement that lasted for about three hundred years (c. 14th-17th centuries). At its core was the "rediscovery" and "rebirth" of the culture and ideas of the classical era (ancient Greece and Rome) by European intellectuals and artists.

The movement began in Italy, especially Florence, and subsequently swept across Europe. It marks the transition of Europe from the Middle Ages to modernity.

Core Ideas and Achievements

  • Humanism: This was the soul of the Renaissance. Thinkers began to shift their focus from God to Man, emphasizing human value, potential, and dignity. They believed that humans could perfect themselves and transform the world through education and reason.
  • Artistic Splendor: This is the most visible manifestation of the Renaissance. Artists drew inspiration from antiquity and developed new techniques, such as perspective, creating countless immortal masterpieces. Representative figures include Leonardo da Vinci (Italian, 1452-1519), Michelangelo (Italian, 1475-1564), and Raphael (Italian, 1483-1520).
  • The Sprouts of Science: The rediscovery of classical texts and the emphasis on "knowing the world through observation" provided fertile intellectual ground for the subsequent Scientific Revolution.

A Historical Chain Reaction

The Renaissance's renewed emphasis on humanity, reason, and observation challenged the rigid dogmas of medieval scholasticism, paving the way for the Scientific Revolution that would challenge the entire traditional worldview.
